We are very grateful to players of the National Lottery; funding through the Heritage Lottery Fund has funded several of Butterfly Conservation’s biggest landscape scale conservation projects.
Current conservation projects include:
The Northern Ireland Butterfly Files, supported by Heritage Lottery Fund’s ‘Our Heritage’ grant programme, began 2016. This project will inspire and support a network of volunteer ‘Butterfly Friends’. They will collect essential data on the abundance and distribution of Northern Ireland’s butterflies and moths to enable Butterfly Conservation to prioritise conservation effort and monitor impacts on target species.
The Wood White is one of the UK’s most threatened butterflies, having suffered massive, ongoing declines. Just 37 occupied sites remain, of which 42% are in the West Midlands. This three-year project, commencing 2016 and funded through Heritage Lottery Fund’s ‘Our Heritage’ grant programme, will conserve the Wood White across four landscapes in the West Midlands. It provides opportunities for people in the region to learn about this butterfly and get involved in saving it from extinction.
Many urban greenspace butterflies are in trouble and are declining rapidly. This three year project, funded through Heritage Lottery Fund’s ‘Our Heritage’ grant programme, will create an Urban Butterfly Net; a network of volunteers trained and equipped to care for greenspaces across Scotland’s Central Belt, enabling butterflies and other wildlife to thrive.
The Sussex Fritillaries for the Future project, funded through Heritage Lottery Fund’s ‘Our Heritage’ grant programme, commenced in spring 2015. This three-year project provides opportunities for people in Sussex to learn about and help to conserve two of the county’s rarest butterflies, the Pearl-bordered Fritillary and Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary.
