Scientific name: Issoria lathonia

This butterfly is widespread in Europe, even occurring occasionally in southern England.  It is not normally seen in large numbers, but occurs in diverse habitats ranging from sea level to high in the mountains.  It has multiple broods and can be seen any time from Spring until Autumn.

The photograph was taken in Kazakhstan near the Chinese border, showing just how widespread this species is.
