Enter the wonderful world of butterflies & moths & find out how you can help them. We will first unveil last night’s live moth trap catch to see some spring-flying species found in the area, then drive (car sharing encouraged) to the nearby Cambus O’May bridge car park for a short walk (approx. 2 miles/3km) to find Pearl-bordered Fritillary butterflies, a speciality of the Cairngorms.

Enter the mysterious world of night creatures! This will include setting up sugar and light traps to attract moths – which we will release unharmed after identification - and using detectors to pick up ultrasound of hunting bats.

Discover the amazing variety of moths caught in the live traps set up overnight in the woods on the Muir of Dinnet National Nature Reserve, followed by a search for day-flying moths and butterflies as time allows.

East Scotland: Aberdeenshire - Bats, Moths & Stars at Battlehill

Discover the nocturnal inhabitants of the Battlehill, including finding out how to use smelly mixtures and bright lights to attract moths plus bat detectors to locate and identify bats. A local astronomer will also be on hand with a telescope to view the wonders of the night sky (or demonstrate what would otherwise be visible if it is cloudy)!
