Species to look out for

This reserve is on Forestry Commission Scotland land, just a few miles from Dumfries. It has over 20 of Scotland's 32 resident butterflies,including the key species Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Dark Green Fritillary and Forester Moth.


Most of the forest is Sitka Spruce but there are significant area of ancient oak woodland, wetlands and grassland.

Set amongst extensive conifer plantations, this area of ancient woodland is managed by Forestry Commission Scotland, with guidance from Butterfly Conservation for both nature conservation and public recreation.
