Butterflies and moths have suffered decades of habitat loss and decline. We need your support to reverse these trends

Make a difference

Marsh Fritillary by Jim AsherButterflies need your help to survive!

Butterflies are in steep decline and they need your help. Five of the 60 species resident in the UK have already become extinct and over two-thirds are declining. Even our common butterflies have become severely reduced in number. For many people, butterflies are no longer an intrinsic part of summer days in gardens and the countryside.

Why?

There are many reasons for these rapid and alarming declines. Habitat destruction, changes in agricultural and forestry practices, the drainage of wetlands and road developments have all had a devastating effect on butterflies and moths. Common butterflies are being severely affected as hedges and field boundaries rich with wild flowers and grasses are destroyed.

What is being done to help butterflies?

Butterfly Conservation is the UK - based charity taking action to reverse these declines and create a healthier environment for us to live in.

Thanks to our efforts, several threatened species are now recovering after a decade of decline, including the Large Blue, which has been successfully re-introduced following its extinction in 1979.

We also help to preserve moths, which have much in common with butterflies and are also declining rapidly. Moths face the additional problem that they are unloved by the public even though they provide an even more crucial role as pollinators and food for birds and other wildlife.

We work with our partners in Butterfly Conservation Europe to conserve butterflies and moths across the continent.

Our work depends on the efforts of thousands of volunteers who help in a variety of ways, including running our network of 31 Branches, organising over 700 educational events and field trips each year, surveying and monitoring butterflies and moths, running our nature reserves, and helping on practical conservation tasks.

How YOU can help.

None of our good work would be possible without your support. You can help us preserve our butterflies and moths by making a donation today.

You can donate online by direct debit or by credit card using the form on the right or send a cheque by post.
