Butterfly Conservation relies on the support of thousands of volunteers

Please consider supporting our work to save butterflies and moths by donating your time.

There is a wide range of opportunties for people who would like to get involved. Whatever your age or experience, whether you can give an hour, a day or several weeks, we'll try to find a way for you to help that will fit in with your lifestyle.

Branch Activities

Iford Manor eventThere are 31 branches of Butterfly Conservation across the UK, each one managed by a committee of volunteers. As well as leading butterfly walks, moth events and countless conservation days, members get involved with publicity, membership recruitment and fundraising.

Monitoring and Recording

You can help with our survey work by simply letting us know if you spot a Humming-bird Hawk-moth or you may be able to commit to walking a short fixed route once a week. Training is available to help you uncover and report on the amazing creatures living near your home.

We also need volunteers who can record and monitor other wildlife as our reserves are invariably very rich sites with fantastic floras and all sorts of other species.

For more information about current monitoring schemes visit the recording page.

Work parties

Volunteer work party in Haugh Wood by Anna JordanMost work parties involve physical activity, whether it's bashing scrub, planting trees or re-build stones walls. They often take place on our nature reserves and are essential tasks to restore or maintain butterfly and moth habitats.

Volunteers receive training and usually work for a few hours at a time. Everyone works at their own speed and refreshment breaks are part of the schedule - baked potatoes cook perfectly on a bonfire of unwanted brash and bracken!

To find out about work parties in your area visit your local branch's website.

Office based support

Butterfly Conservation has four regional offices from where we coordinate our outposted staff and volunteers. Scientists and ecologists work alongside the finance, fundraising, membership and publicity teams. Our office based volunteers support all these functions, helping with tasks such as database input, making up reports, filing or cataloguing of materials, preparing mailings, and photocopying. If you are interested in volunteering in one of our offices please print out and fill in the volunteer registration form and send it to the office nearest you.
