East Scotland - Aberdeenshire: Habitat Conservation For Aspen-loving Moths
Tuesday 6th June 2017, 10.30am-3.30pm
Crathie, Ballater, Aberdeenshire

Help us look after the Dark Bordered Beauty moth at Crathie, Ballater.

We need volunteers to help us remove old fencing damaged in the Storm Frank floods and erect new exclosures on a site that needs management to encourage aspen tree regeneration.

Aspen supports a variety of wildlife, including the rare Dark Bordered Beauty moth.

In the few areas it is known from in Northern Scotland, the caterpillars only eat the leaves of young aspen suckers, which on this site need protecting from browsing by rabbits and deer.

If we finish early, we may have time to look for caterpillars too!

This task is suitable for reasonably fit adults & accompanied 13-17 year olds.

Please bring your own packed lunch & outdoor clothing including waterproofs + stout footwear; work gloves, safety glasses & tools will be provided.

Event organised with Aberdeenshire Council & Balmoral Estate Ranger Services & Invercauld Estate. Booking essential.
