The event will start with an illustrated talk about moths and butterflies, followed by an examination of the moths from traps that were out on the Moss overnight. After lunch, we will walk over the Moss looking for Large Heath butterflies and noting other species.
Meet at Portmoak Village Hall, KY13 9HY, at 11am. The talk - An Introduction to Moths - will start at 11.15 and the moth traps will be examined at around 12pm. All moths will be released unharmed. After lunch - please bring your own packed lunch - we will make our way onto Portmoak Moss itself, and search for butterflies and other interesting things. The rendezvous point on the Moss is at the Woodland Trust entrance gate, Grid Reference NO18300150, at 2pm.
Please join the group at any time throughout the morning or afternoon.
Note that there is only very limited parking at the Portmoak Moss entrance, but there is ample parking at the Village Hall, which is about a 400yd walk from the Moss.
Portmoak Moss is a Lowland Raised Bog under restoration and as such it is boggy! Wellington boots or other sturdy waterproof footwear are definitely recommended. This is family friendly event - but because of the nature of the Moss, children under 16 should be accompanied by an adult during the afternoon session.
There is no charge for the event and pre-booking is not necessary. Please contact Duncan Davidson if you want more information. Telephone 01383 730446, email firstname.lastname@example.org
