Dorset: Guided Walk in Sydling St Nicholas Valley

Dorset: Guided Walk in Sydling St Nicholas Valley
Sunday 11th August 2013, 10.30am-4.00pm
Sydling St Nicholas

This is a guided walk through the varied habitat of Huish Farm to the chalk downland hillside of Ridge Hill for second brood Adonis Blue.  We meet at 10.30 am in the farmyard at map reference ST 634 988.  Bring a packed lunch if you intend to stay for the afternoon event.
Between 1.00 and 2.00 pm we transfer to Sydling Brook Farm for lunch with a superb view south along the valley. We meet off the public byway track, at map reference ST 637 033, which is accessed from the Batcombe ridge road. To avoid large potholes, park at the road and request a lift by Land Rover from the leader.
From chalk downland below, the upper area changes to acid clay with flints and the terrain is a model example of grazed grassland with outcrops of young gorse and bracken with violets supporting a strong colony of Dark Green Fritillary. The afternoon will be a casual 'butterfly walkabout' to view and enjoy several species on the slopes.
