Use our template to make a butterfly kite.

You will need:

  • Our Butterfly Kite template printed onto paper or card
  • Colouring pens/pencils
  • Lollipop stick
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • String

Step 1

Download and print the butterfly kite template, then colour it in - butterflies come in lots of different colours and patterns; you can choose to make up your own or copy the pattern of a real butterfly. Check out our gallery for inspiration.

Step 2

Butterfly kite fold

Fold the kite in half along the centre line with the wings facing out.

Step 3

Butterfly kite fold

Fold each wing towards you along the diagonal lines.

Step 4

Back of butterfly kite

Once folded, flip the kite over and tape a lollipop stick to the back, a little above centre. This will give your kite some strength.

Step 5

Butterfly kite being hole punched

Finally, use a hole punch to punch a hole through the folded section of your kite where the dots are, and attach a length of string (we'd recommend at least 1.5metres).

Step 6

Head outside to fly your kite! A light summer breeze is ideal for kite flying, but you could also try running with your kite to make it fly.

Did you know?!

Radar records have shown that Painted Lady butterflies fly over 500m up in the sky when on migration!
