Bitter Vetch and Yarrow Dependent Micros

Free Online Virtual Zoom Workshop

Thursday 22nd July

10-10.45am

and repeated

Saturday 24th July

10-10.45am

Background

Yarrow support a suite of lepidoptera.  It is a foodpant for several widespread species whose caterpillars feed on a number of other low-growing plants including Ruby Tiger, Yellow Shell and Silver-ground Carpet, as well as species that almost solely feed on it e.g. Tawny Speckled Pug and Yarrow Plume.  However, there are also some very rare, and probably under-recorded micro-moths, that exclusively feed on it at the larval stage.  This includes Highland Bent-wing Bucculatrix humiliella, Highland Flat-body Depressaria silesiaca and Yarrow Flat-body Depressaria olerella.

Bitter Vetch also has a similar assemblage of rare, and probably under-recorded, micro-lepidoptera most notably Scarce Bent-wing Leucoptera orobi and Northern Neb Xystophora pulveratella.

A number of these rare Yarrow and Bitter Vetch dependent moths are High Priority species in Butterfly Conservation Scotland’s Conservation Strategy.  It is therefore important we raise their profile and determine their current status by encouraging targeted surveys.

Aim

The aim of this online workshop is to provide information on their identification, distribution, and ecology, particularly tips and signs to help find their early stages in the field.  It is hoped that attendees will be sufficiently enthused to undertake targeted surveys to help us more accurately determine their distribution and current status.

Booking

The workshops are free and anyone can attend, however, booking is essential as details on how to access the Online Zoom Virtual Workshop will only be sent to those that register an interest.  This link will be sent out in the day(s) before each event.  Full instructions on how to join the meeting will also be provided for those new to Zoom.

The online workshop will be held at 10am on Thursday morning and repeated on at 10am Saturday morning.  It is advisable to join the zoom room around ten to fifteen minutes before the start of the workshop in case of any last-minute technical difficulties.
