Northern Brown Argus

Free Field Training Workshop

Morrone Birkwood by Braemar

Saturday 9th July

10.30am - 1pm

Background

The Northern Brown Argus is a nationally scarce species and one of Scotland’s most threatened butterflies.

The butterfly mostly inhabits flower-rich grasslands either at the coast or in the uplands. The presence of Common Rock-rose is essential as this is the sole foodplant of the butterfly’s caterpillar. Sadly species-rich grasslands are under threat, having declined nationwide by over 97% in the last century.

The butterfly is found in the Scottish Borders, East Lothian, South Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway, Fife, Perthshire, Aberdeenshire, Badenoch and Strathspey, Easter Ross and Sutherland.

Aim

The aim of the field training is to encourage attendees to carry out targeted surveys this year for Northern Brown Argus at locations where the butterfly has not been recorded for some years.

The workshop will provide information on identification, distribution, ecology and survey methods.

If the weather is fine, there will be an option to stay longer and head further up the hill to look for the rare and beautiful Mountain Burnet moth.

Booking

The session is free and anyone can attend, however, please let us know that you are coming along and we will send you directions to the meeting point.

Please note that the session will involve walking in areas that are a little rough underfoot with rocks, bracken, heather etc.
