We will be holding guided walks at Fineshade Wood daily from May 14th until the end of the flight season (June 12th) as part of the ‘Chequered Skippers – Taking Flight’ Project funded by the Green Recovery Challenge Fund.

Here we will be keeping an eye out for our three target species, Grizzled Skippers, Dingy Skippers and, if we are very lucky, Chequered Skippers! We will discuss the ecology and behaviour of the all three species and how habitat management in this woodland has enabled the Chequered Skipper to become successfully established since its reintroduction in 2018. To learn more about the site and the Chequered Skipper before you arrive please take a look at the following leaflet here.

Booking
Skipper Guided Walks are free to attend and are ‘turn up on the day’ with no booking required. However, if demand is high we will move to a bookings only system with a capacity of 20 per walk. We at present don’t have the capacity to cater to large groups or organisations on these walks.

Accessibility
Walks will be approximately 6km around the site and last around 2hrs. They are suitable for limited mobility with regard to the paths we will take, however they may not be in terms of their length. Please bear this in mind if you are yourself someone who has limited mobility or if you are bringing someone who has limited mobility. We are happy to discuss this further by email or over the phone on 01780 444067 if you are unsure. If we are out on a guided walk you can leave a voicemail and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

We ask that you refrain from bringing dogs on guided walks even on lead (with the exception of service dogs), simply to avoid disruption and to prevent anyone who has phobias surrounding dogs from feeling discouraged from joining in.

Times & Meeting Point
Walks will be held at 11:00am daily depending on the weather and last approximately 2hrs. If the weather is unsuitable we may offer a replacement guided walks at 2:00pm-4:00pm instead on the same day. We will be meeting at the entrance to the Visitor Centre near the children’s playground. Check the display board here to see if there have been changes to the guided walk on any given day.
