19/06/2023 update: The flight season for the Chequered Skipper is now over for this year and there will be no more Guided Walks. Thank you to all those that came along.
We will be holding guided walks at Fineshade Wood Wednesday through to Sunday from 17th May until 11th June (also including Monday 29th May) as part of the ‘Chequered Skippers – Taking Flight’ Project funded by the Green Recovery Challenge Fund.
Here we will be keeping an eye out for our three target species, Grizzled Skippers, Dingy Skippers and, if we are very lucky, Chequered Skippers! We will discuss the ongoing project and the ecology and behaviour of all three species and how habitat management in this woodland has enabled the Chequered Skipper to become successfully established since its reintroduction in 2018. To learn more about the site and the Chequered Skipper before you arrive please take a look at the following leaflet here.
Booking
Skipper Guided Walks are free to attend and will need to be booked in advance via Eventbrite with a capacity of 20 per walk, using the link below. We at present don’t have the capacity to cater to large groups or organisations on these walks.
Accessibility
Walks will be approximately 6km around the site and last around 2 hours. They are suitable for limited mobility with regard to the paths we will take, however they may not be in terms of their length. Please bear this in mind if you are yourself someone who has limited mobility or if you are bringing someone who has limited mobility. We are happy to discuss this further by email @email or over the phone on 07485372231 if you are unsure. If we are out on a guided walk, you can leave a voicemail and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
We ask that you refrain from bringing dogs on guided walks even on a lead (with the exception of service dogs), simply to avoid disruption and to prevent anyone who has phobias surrounding dogs from feeling discouraged from joining in.
Times & Meeting Point
Walks will start at 10:30am and last approximately 2 hours. If the weather is really bad then we may need to cancel and you will be contacted via email by 5pm the day before your booking to let you know. The meeting point will be at the entrance to the Visitor Centre near the children’s playground. Google Maps or What 3 Words ///tapes.shunning.refreshed
