Volunteers are needed to help us maintain the habitat for the Small Blue butterfly at The Rifle Ranges, Fort George a few miles outside Ardersier. On the day, we will be removing broom and gorse which are encroaching into the bare ground favored by the larval foodplant, Kidney Vetch. The work will also benefit Dingy Skipper. The Small Blue is a charismatic wee butterfly it is the UK's smallest butterfly, with a wingspan of only 18 - 25mm and despite the name it is not blue but rather a dark dusky colour with the male having a smattering of silvery blue scales. Small Blue is found in small patches where the caterpillars sole foodplant Kidney Vetch grows, the colonies are small and often fragmented Even if you can only attend for part of the day you are very welcome to join us. We are also looking for volunteers who may wish to come along and be the event photographer and maybe try your hand at event write ups. This event is part of The Species on the Edge program and is made possible by funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
