We'll be raking mulch from scallops (d-shaped glades at the edge of woodland) created last winter through Butterfly Conservation's Species Recovery Programme project. Raking will improve the rate at which nectar sources and flowering plants used by butterflies and moths can grow in the clearings.

The work party will run from 10am to approximately 2pm and includes a lunch break.

We suggest you bring a hot drink and lunch, and wear warm, waterproof clothing (depending on weather conditions) and sturdy footwear. Safety gear, rakes, and hand tools will be available to borrow, although you may prefer to bring your own equipment.

Meet at the gate on Helpston Road to the east of Castor Hanglands (Grid reference: TF 12511 01675, https://what3words.com/vowel.apart.flushes, nearest postcode PE6 7EL). A marshal will be present to provide instructions on where to park. After 10am, the gate will be closed. A small amount of parking will be available outside the gate on the roadside verge.

You can join our practical conservation group on our exciting new volunteer portal, Assemble, to find out about this and other upcoming events in the Cambridgeshire & Essex area.

This event is part of a Species Recovery Programme Capital Grant Scheme project funded by Natural England and is being held in partnership with Forestry England and the Cambridgeshire & Essex Branch of Butterfly Conservation.
