Large Blue (upperwing) by Keith Warmington

The Large Blue butterfly is a conservation success story. A carefully targeted reintroduction programme, involving Butterfly Conservation and our partners, has made it possible to return this magnificent butterfly to the UK, following its extinction in 1979.

Thanks to thorough research, expert knowledge and perseverance the reintroduction has been a success. But this is only the beginning of the story. The butterfly’s complex life cycle and reliance on a specific species of red ant means it still needs help. The Large Blue can now be found in the Polden Hills in Somerset and the limestone grassland of the Cotswolds. It is vital to maintain a strong network of connected sites within these landscapes, as small isolated colonies will struggle to survive.

Your donation could help secure a safe future for the Large Blue in South West England.

By supporting this project and others like it, your donation will be worth at least twice the amount with match funding.
