Volunteer with us

Volunteering

Butterfly Conservation relies on the support of thousands of volunteers, and we are always looking for more help inside the office and in the field. Whether you want to volunteer at a local branch, get outside and help manage our nature reserves or help with one of our events, we have something for everyone to get involved in! Your time can make a real difference.

Recording and monitoring

Butterfly Conservation runs schemes to monitor butterflies & moths which involve over 40,000 volunteer recorders. Anyone can take part, from butterfly beginners to experienced recorders. Butterflies are extremely valuable indicators of the state of the environment. The ongoing recording and monitoring programmes help us direct our conservation effort where it is needed. It also helps us asses how effective current conservation work is.

Fundraising

Butterflies are beautiful and vital to the health of the environment but they are disappearing fast. We need your help to save them. Holding a coffee morning, opening a garden, taking part in a marathon, bungee jumping and being tattooed are just some of the fantastic ways our supporters have raised money for us. We have many ideas, hints and tips if you plan on fundraising for us.

Gardening

Butterflies and moths will visit any garden, however small if they can feed on suitable nectar plants. There are likely to be over a hundred species of moth in an ordinary urban back garden, as well as up to 18 species of butterfly. Read our tips to attract these colourful visitors, and even plant to encourage them to breed in your garden, rather than simply to visit.

Family fun

Helping to save butterflies and moths can be fun whether you are 5 or 105. Our family pages are full of activities to teach young people about butterflies and moths and fun the whole family can join in with, whatever the weather.
