Thank you for helping Butterfly Conservation as a County Recorder or Verification Assisstant.
Thank you for the time and expertise you give as a County Recorder or Verification Assistant. Butterfly Conservation works with and supports the UK-wide County Recorder network. As part of your role as County Recorder or Verification Assistant you volunteer time and expertise to assist Butterfly Conservation to check and process moth and butterfly records from our schemes and projects. You also provide feedback and encouragement to recorders who are contributing data to the national schemes. And as a County Recorder, you may also supply verified records from local sources and your local database for inclusion in the national scheme databases.
These critical voluntary activities enable robust data on butterfly and moth observations to enter the national recording schemes and encourage best practice recording.
It is important for us to acknowledge the significance of your roles for the national recording schemes. And we want to ensure that you have all the information and support you need from us. We have therefore prepared the following videos and documentation for all County Recorders and Verification Assistants. This provides a core component of our ‘County Recorder Toolkit’ of resources and serves as an induction for new County Recorders and Verification Assistants joining the network. Though the roles are different, we have combined this training to avoid duplication and for awareness.
You can work your way through the content below in your own time. At the end, please complete the Training Recap. This is to help you reflect on the content, to help us check our training is suitable and (in the case of GDPR and Safeguarding) to help us check we are being compliant with legal requirements. Once the Training Recap is complete we know that you're ready to start volunteering with us.

Supporting Science
Our work to develop a County Recorder ‘toolkit’ is part of Supporting Science. This project will improve data flow and better support our recorders and volunteers. We will improve access to natural heritage and grow digital skills by developing tools and collaboration. This project was made possible thanks to National Lottery players as we received DCMS and National Lottery funding, distributed by The Heritage Fund as part of their Digital Skills for Heritage initiative.
