Volunteers are vital if we are to save butterflies, moths and their environments in Warwickshire. Almost all our conservation and recording efforts rely upon the goodwill of land owners and time given freely by our dedicated team of volunteers.

Butterfly Transect Recorders

A Butterfly Transect is a walk along a set route that is divided into separate sections. In each of these sections the number of butterflies are counted along with the climatic conditions. The results are entered into the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (UKBMS). Using this method, comparisons can be made year-on-year to assess the effects of habitat change and to inform habitat management practices to ensure the survival of important species.

A weekly commitment is usually required carried out by either an individual or a pair. The walks are done from April until September every year.

This requires a long-term commitment with the aim of gathering detailed records of butterfly numbers and species along a given route over many years. These Transects help us to assess the effects of habitat change and loss at a site and help inform habitat management practices to ensure the survival of important species in our area.

Habitat Management / Organised Work Parties

Our volunteer work parties help with the management of over 30 sites within Warwickshire that support our important butterfly and moth species. Working with other Practical Conservation Group Volunteers doing hands-on, practical work, volunteers make sure the site is right for butterflies and moths by cutting, raking, planting of wildflowers, erecting fencing and repairing footpaths. Much of this work takes place on important protected wildlife sites like our own butterfly Reserve at Ryton Wood Meadows near Coventry. We also work in partnership with other environmental organisations, land owners and government agencies to improve and protect habitats for butterflies and moths.

Work Party

Our work parties are usually held on Tuesdays and Fridays with some Sunday sessions taking place at Ryton Wood Meadows.  You can attend as frequently as you wish and stay as long as you like - every little helps and everyone is welcome.  We start at 9:30am and finish at 4:00pm.  You will need to bring suitable footwear, old clothing, hot drinks and refreshment.
