The white wings have blackish clouding in the outer area of the forewing. The extent and intensity of the clouding vary, generally stronger in males, and is usually accompanied by two central forewing spots and an additional mark at the centre of the trailing edge.

The larvae can be seen from late June to late August before they overwinter as pupae on the ground amongst plant debris. The adults are often seen flying at dusk, especially along hedgerows.

Caterpillar Food Plants

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), Plum (Prunus domestica), cherry, Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris) as well as cultivated relatives.

Habitat

Found in a variety of habitats including gardens, hedgerows, fens and woodland.

Distribution

  • Countries – England, Wales and Ireland
  • Common and well distributed throughout most of England and Wales north to Yorkshire, as well as colonies in Co. Durham and Northumberland. Widespread and frequent in the Channel Islands, and quite well distributed in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
