Butterfly Conservation couldn’t do the work it does without the incredible dedication of volunteers. This Volunteers' Week (3-9 Jun), discover how you could make a difference for butterflies and moths.

Go butterfly spotting

In order to carry out our conservation work, we need data. Our two UK-wide recording schemes Butterflies for the New Millennium and the National Moth Recording Scheme contain nearly 16 million butterfly records and nearly 31 million macro-moth records – most of which have been collected by dedicated volunteers up and down the country who go out to spot butterflies and moths and record them. Thanks to their incredible effort, we can have an even bigger impact for butterflies and moths than we could alone.

Do you want to get out to spot butterflies and moths and contribute vital data at the same time? Sign up now.

Show off your photography skills

Do you have a camera and a creative eye? We always need photographs and videos to help share our message and create materials to educate and inspire people to protect butterflies and moths. From snaps of Skippers to videos of Vapourers, if you would like to contribute your work, please get in touch at @email

Get your hands dirty

We have an incredible number of conservation projects happening right across the UK and there are lots of opportunities to get your hands dirty with some practical conservation work.
From planting caterpillar foodplants and clearing scrub, to abseiling down cliffs to remove invasive species – our conservation volunteers make a huge difference for butterflies on the ground. Get in touch with your local Branch or search our listings to find out what opportunities there are in your area.

Inspire others

Do you love butterflies and moths and want to share your passion with others? We want to inspire as many people as possible to care about butterflies, moths, and our environment and we need your help to do it.

Could you hold a talk for your local Branch, host an event for kids to inspire the next generation of butterfly conservationists, take part in a challenge to raise funds for Butterfly Conservation’s work, or get your community involved in our Wild Spaces programme? There are lots of ways to get involved – get in touch with your local Branch with your ideas and to find out what’s happening where you are.

Make things happen

Do you have big ideas for how you can help butterflies and moths in your region? Or want to have more of a say on what your Branch gets up to? Join your local Branch committee and help make a difference in your area. We have 31 volunteer-led Branches in the UK – whether you have a head for numbers or a knack for tech, find a role that suits you at your local Branch or search our current opportunities.
