Butterfly Conservation Chief Executive Dr Martin Warren pays tribute to former Chair Harold Hughes
"I am very sad to report that Harold passed away last week at his Shropshire home.
Harold was Chair of Butterfly Conservation (BC) from 1991-1999, a pivotal period for the charity during which he was the main architect of driving Butterfly Conservation into the professional era.
Harold helped raise funds to appoint BCs first member of staff (Andrew Phillips) in 1990 and was responsible for bringing in major sponsorship from BP which helped us launch an advertising campaign which quickly took our membership from under 3,000 to 10,000.
I had the privilege of working with Harold for many years after I was appointed as Conservation Officer in 1993. He had great vision about the future of BC and we all owe him a huge debt of gratitude for launching us into a period of great growth. He will be sadly missed."
