This course consists of two sessions covering the basics of QGIS. The sessions will be aimed at those with no prior knowledge of QGIS but who are keen to learn. Each session will be limited to 10 people and will only run if three or more people are attending. To build your skills and get comfortable with using QGIS, in this session you will learn the following:

  • The key features and buttons in QGIS
  • Types of data and formats you can use in QGIS
  • What map projections are and how to apply them
  • How to set up QGIS and make a ‘project’
  • How to add basemaps from the web
  • How to calculate grid references
  • The basics of working with attribute data
  • How to make selections and filter within datasets
  • How to calculate the areas of mapped shapes e.g. a nature reserve
  • How to create new layers and digitise shapes
  • How to add stylising to your layers e.g. change colours
  • How to export your maps as a jpeg or other formats
  • How to carry out spatial queries
  • Ways of accessing ongoing QGIS support from BC via Yammer and online

To complete the beginners course you will need to book on one date for part 1 and one date for part 2:

Once you have completed your Part 1 booking (2 March, 17:30 to 20:30) below you will be able to book your Part 2 session.
