Allt Mhuic is an area of approximately 100 hectares that includes grassland, moorland and native woodland between two large conifer plantations on the north side of Loch Arkaig. We run the reserve in conjunction with the Forestry Commission Scotland.
Look out for
The area’s special dragonfly, the Azure Hawker, can be found in the wet flushes on the lower slopes. Dippers breed on the burn, while chats and flycatchers frequent the open woodland. Otter, Pine Marten, Golden Eagle, Osprey and Divers are possibilities. Key butterfly species are Chequered Skipper, Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Large Heath and Scotch Argus.
Features
The reserve boasts several orchid species, including Lesser Twayblade and Fragrant. Look out for the large Wood Ant nests.

The reserve is on the north shore of Loch Arkaig, 20 miles due north of Fort William, along a narrow single-track road six miles west of Clunes.
Access
Open all year. There is a car park and information board.
Health and Safety
Most ticks are little more than an irritation, but a few can transmit Lyme disease, a rare and potentially serious illness which is treatable with antibiotics if diagnosed early. It is therefore important to be informed and take some simple precautions.
